A MUSIC ZINE FOR ALL.
Mishmash is a music zine that has been created in response to the rise of online music streaming and sharing, which has reduced the process of finding new music to one that is almost automated and no longer has a sense of human touch. Furthermore, music spaces within social media are often filled with gatekeeping and toxicity, often discouraging young people from branching out into new music. Mishmash aims to bring a physical element back to music sharing while creating an open and judgement free space to discover new genres and artists.
Experimentation is at the core of the zine, reflected in both the visual style and the varied nature of its content. Each issue focuses on a different topic that is intentionally open to multiple interpretations, creating the opportunity for the content to branch out in unexpected directions.
Despite the issues having an array of different content, each zine starts with a word tree that depicts the genres and artists typically associated with the topic, and finishes with a DIY section for finding new music as well as a song recommendation section filled with contributions from the community.
Each zine comes with an index that provides a definition for all of the genres mentioned in the content, as well as an accompanying playlist that is intended as a starting point for the audience to then look further into the artists or genres within it that they enjoy.
